EU Energy Label
We have all seen the labels on products and light bulbs which rate them from A
to G (now up to A++ for fridges). By law, retailers, mail-order companies and
manufacturers must display these labels on all new domestic fridges, freezers
and fridge-freezers, washing machines, electric tumble dryers, combined
washer-dryers, dishwashers and light-bulbs for sale. Labels for different
products contain different pieces of information. The purpose of these labels
is to allow consumers to easily compare appliances. If you click on different
parts of the label below, you can find out what each section of the label
refers to.
The energy ratings
Most appliances are rated on a scale of A to G with ‘A’ being the most
efficient and ‘G’ the least. The only exceptions are refrigeration products.
The more energy efficient an appliance is, the more money you can save – and
the more you help the environment. By buying a more efficient model, you’re not
compromising when it comes to performance either.
Energy consumption and running costs
This shows how much electricity is used under standard conditions, measured in
kWh/year “kilowatt hours” for refrigeration or kWh/cycle for washing and other
appliances.
You can work out the average annual running cost and saving by multiplying the
KWh consumption figure by 7p (which is the average unit price of electricity –
your actual savings will depend upon the exact consumption figure)
Performance in other areas
Laundry and dishwashing labels also have ratings for washing, spin and/or
drying performance. The A-G indicators here are similar to the main efficiency
ratings, and are based on standard industry testing – the test cycle used is on
the label. (“A” rating is the best)
Noise
Some models will also include information on the noise of the product (although
this is not legally necessary) A lower number shown here means that the
appliance emits less noise.

| Laundry: |
 |
Washing machines do, on average, an amazing 274 cycles a year. But the amount
of wasted electricity from inefficient machines is exorbitant. You could cut
this wastage by up to one third by using an energy efficient machine.
Using a 40C wash cycle rather than 60C means you use a third less electricity.
Reduce the wash to a 30C cycle and the amount of electricity saved (not to
mention money) will be even higher. This will not affect the quality of
cleaning.

| Refrigeration: |
 |
UK households spend £1.2 billion worth of electricity every
year, just on refrigeration and freezing.
|
Fridges and freezers are the most hardworking appliances in our kitchens - they
are on the go 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So, if your fridge or freezer
isn't energy efficient, it's costing you a lot more to run and is contributing
to climate change.
Buying a new Energy Efficiency Recommended fridge-freezer could save you up to £35
a year on your electricity bill and help reduce our carbon dioxide
output.

|
| Dishwashers: |
 |
One in four households in the UK now has a dishwasher in
their kitchen.
|
Your dishwasher does, on average, 250 cycles per year so you could be saving
around £15 a year on your electricity bill if you have an Energy Efficient
model.
Did you know ?--> To run a cycle on an inefficient appliance costs around 11p
but to run the same cycle on an energy efficient machine will cost you only 6p.
A difference of 5p per wash. Energy efficient dishwashers save on water
consumption, so are good for the environment too!

exceed specified energy efficiency requirements and are backed by the
Government. It's your guarantee that the product will save energy, cost less to
run and help the environment.
